Activist Post: Hugo Chavez, World Leaders and Cancer Deaths ...

Janet C. Phelan
Activist Post

The death this past week of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez raises some disturbing questions. It was reported that the iconoclastic and controversial leader succumbed to a two-year-long battle with cancer. In so doing, he may have been the first world leader to lose his life to cancer since 1980, when the Shah of Iran succumbed to non-Hodgkin?s lymphoma while in exile.

With cancer deaths figuring at 23% of the mortality rate in the United States (cancer is the leading cause of death in developed countries and the second leading cause of death in developing countries), one might think that the Big C might be striking down leaders of countries with the same regularity as it afflicts everyone else. The rather unusual and nearly universal tendency for the power elite to sidestep cancer death has raised questions as to whether or not the powers-that-be might be bogarting the cure.

Since Hugo Chavez was leading his country, boldly, in a manner that distinguished his leadership from the lockstep, pro-American arse licking that typifies most of the world?s statesmen at this juncture in time, one might ask if the power elite specifically bogarted the cure from Hugo Chavez.

In a recent article in Press TV, Dr. Kevin Barrett has suggested that the CIA may have ?given? Chavez the death-dealing cancer (Source). Cancer may be transmitted through injection by an unethical medical professional. A number of sources have alleged that a fast-acting cancer was developed in CIA labs decades ago and was responsible for deaths ranging from Jack Ruby to investigative journalist Mae Brussell.

Barrett writes that Chavez himself wondered if agents for the US government had given him (and other Latin American leaders) the illness that he succumbed to on March 5th:
A little over a year ago, Chavez went on Venezuelan national radio and said: ?I don?t know but? it is very odd that we have seen Lugo affected by cancer, Dilma when she was a candidate, me, going into an election year, not long ago Lula and now Cristina? It is very hard to explain, even with the law of probabilities, what has been happening to some leaders in Latin America. It?s at the very least strange, very strange.
If one looks at other notable politicos who have succumbed to cancer of late, the picture becomes a bit eerie. The 2010 breast cancer death of Elizabeth Edwards, estranged wife of former Presidential candidate John Edwards, raises concerns as to whether John Edwards? dramatic fall from grace and subsequent prosecution dovetailed with the cure being withheld from his wife. Edwards was eventually charged with soliciting and covering up spending more than $925,000 to hide his mistress and their baby during the peak of his 2008 campaign for the White House.

The grand jury's indictment contained six felony counts, including conspiracy, four counts of receiving illegal campaign contributions and one count of false statements on his public campaign finance reports.

As Edwards had become a targeted political figure, it is safe to assume that his Icarus-like tumble might have resulted in perks (such as the coveted cancer cure) being withheld from family members.

Upon learning that Edwards had fathered a baby with a campaign staffer, Elizabeth Edwards? fury became tabloid fare. It was announced in the national press when she cut him out of her will (Source). One might wonder if her well-publicized rage was solely due to his infidelity or if she understood the price she was paying for his being kicked off the political gravy train.

I mean, come on now. Remember Bill and Jennifer Flowers? JFK and Marilyn? Dwight Eisenhower and Kay Summersby? LBJ and Madeleine Brown? Powerful men tend to have powerful libidos and for many women, there is no aphrodisiac quite like a man with clout. When someone high enough on the political food chain is trashed by the press for what the DC Press Club knows nearly every powerful man does in his boudoir, then it is safe to assume that a very powerful someone (or someones) wants him out.

Another upstart politico who recently succumbed to cancer was Canadian National Democratic Party (NDP) leader, Jack Layton. On May 2, 2011, he led his party to the most successful result in the NDP?s history, winning 103 seats?enough to form Canada?s Official Opposition. It was a short-lived victory for Layton, who succumbed to cancer on August 22, less than four months later. Layton was committed to ousting the conservative Harper government and the NDP?s leftist policies are in stark contrast to the policies being promoted under the Stephen Harper reign. Prime Minister Harper is largely considered to be a faithful lap dog for US interests.

Dr. Kevin Barrett also pointed to the cult classic, Confessions of an Economic Hitman, to buttress his argument that the CIA may have given Chavez cancer. Barrett writes:

John Perkins, in his bestselling book Confessions of an Economic Hit Man, supplies more evidence that the bankers that own the US government routinely murder heads of state, using private assassins as well as CIA killers.
Barrett goes on to write:
Perkins would meet with a targeted nation?s leader and say: ?I have a fist-full of hundred dollar bills in one hand, and a bullet in the other. Which do you want?? If the leader accepted the loans, thereby enslaving his country, he got the payoff. If he angrily chased Perkins out of his office, the bankers would call in the ?asteroids? to assassinate the uncooperative head of state.
As the US has tended in recent years to obscure its blacker activities under ?plausible deniability,? it doesn?t take much imagination to figure that cancer would be a better cloak for murder than a bullet to the head.

The evidence amassing that cures for cancer do indeed exist is becoming overwhelming. For starters, I offer the following links:

The fact remains that if no cures for cancer exist, then we should be seeing about a quarter of the power elite dying of cancer. Instead, we see a few upstart and inconvenient political figures who are succumbing to this disease.

Whether or not the CIA ?gave? Hugo Chavez cancer, one thing we can be sure of. They sure as shinola didn?t give him the cure.

Syria Opposition Leaders
Delay Trip to Washington

Washington - Leaders of the Syrian opposition have put off a visit to Washington for a series of high-profile meetings, including an expected stop at the White House, administration officials said Thursday, underscoring the challenge the United States faces in cultivating a still-evolving political movement. The Obama administration had invited Moaz al-Khatib, the leader of the Syrian Opposition Council, and Gen. Salim Idriss, the leader of the opposition?s military wing, to make the trip this week, but Mr. Khatib told Secretary of State John Kerry last week at a conference in Rome on the Syria crisis

Comments:
I would not allow any negotiations now with any group(s) trying to oust Assad. They have all been infiltrated by Al Qaeda and therefore, we would be rewarding our terrorist enemies. Beware of their Trojan Horses showing up at the White House looking for "humanitarian aid."

John Huttick was weeping in Philadelphia?s Common Pleas Court last month as he testified about losing his eye in an August 2011 fight. The prosthetic eye popped out and Huttick caught it, prompting the judge to grant a mistrial. The Philadelphia Daily News reports the aggravated assault retrial began on Wednesday. Prosecutors allege 23-year-old Matthew Brunelli punched Mr Huttick in the left eye with an object that may have been a key. Mr Huttick?s eye ultimately had to be removed.

Keen On? Rhapsody: How Streaming Is Radically Reinventing The ...

Brian Zisk?s annual SFMusicTech conference is always a good place to gauge the temperature of the music industry. And judging by the vitality of this year?s event, things are finally beginning to look up in an industry that has been decimated by the file-sharing revolution. As Jon Irwin, president of the on-demand streaming service Rhapsody, told me at SFMusicTech, smartphone technology ? particularly the iOS and Android platforms ? has enabled a radically new experience for music lovers.

As Irwin explained, this shifts the industry?s business model from the sale of product to what he calls ?streaming as a platform,? noting the increasing dominance of subscription services like Rhapsody, Spotify and Pandora. The big new business opportunities, Irwin says, both lie with the collection of data about consumer behavior and with enabling artists to build much more intimate relationships with their fans. With their more than a million paid subscribers, the 11-year-old Rhapsody remains an important player in this new economy.

But why should we choose Rhapsody over newer and splashier services like Rdio, Spotify or Pandora? According to Irwin, it?s because Rhapsody really puts us in control of our music, allowing us to take it with us wherever we go. And for artists, Irwin insists, Rhapsody is a much better investment, proving greater revenue than either Spotify or Pandora.

The Rhapsody digital music service (www.rhapsody.com) gives subscribers unlimited on-demand access to more than sixteen million songs, whether they?re listening on a PC, laptop, Internet connected home stereo or TV, MP3 player or mobile phone. It is the first and largest premium, on-demand music service in the United States. Rhapsody allows subscribers to access their music through more touch-points than any other digital music service, including mobile phones from Verizon Wireless, through Rhapsody applications on the Apple iPhone, iPod Touch,...

Accenture Globalization And Diverse Supplier Development by Al ...

green and red apples fitted together

Today, a company?s corporate social responsibility initiatives are increasingly connected to the success of its business. This is also true when creating and maintaining a culture of inclusion and diversity.? Accenture?s core values ? including Best People, Integrity and Respect for the Individual ? support our diverse workplace, and?we?ve?found that extending our inclusion and diversity efforts to suppliers has been important and effective.

In 2006, Accenture launched the Diverse Supplier Development Program (DSDP), a formal mentoring program, which matches diverse suppliers with Accenture senior executives as one-on-one mentors to help develop and build the capacity of their businesses. The first class of 10 minority- and women-owned businesses from the United States graduated in 2008. The second class increased to 16 suppliers and included LGBT and small business enterprises. In 2012, the program welcomed the largest class to date, with 24 diverse suppliers.

This 18-month program focuses on knowledge exchange and collaboration among the suppliers so they can explore ways in which they can do business together or team on business opportunities.? It also allows our company to convene high potential companies and help support and improve their sustainable business practices.

Over the course of DSDP, the owners and senior leadership of these suppliers are offered quarterly training symposia, such as business development, marketing and social media, change management and leadership development. Frank Payne, chairman & CEO of PQC International ? a professional services company in Atlanta and a graduate of our third U.S. DSDP ? participated in these training symposia. He found that the benefits ?from the mentorship, networking, and robust training content enabled PQC International to refine existing processes and increase engagement with its associates, resulting in an increase in productivity and client acquisition.?

We?ve seen ? especially with the graduation of our third class ? that these diverse suppliers were able to increase the capacity of their business and enhance their client service.? As DSDP has grown, so has the ability of these suppliers to develop a strategic vision and focus, better identify potential partners and improve internal processes. To date, we?ve mentored 50 diverse suppliers in the United States.

The DSDP doesn?t just help an individual business owner or a small company.? It also brings insights to our company and helps us gain a more complete understanding of the market, learn how to better nurture supplier sustainability, see new perspectives and get ideas from these suppliers.? In addition, we discovered how supporting diverse suppliers can lead the way to making a powerful difference in the communities in which we live and work.? By breaking down barriers so diverse companies can better participate in the marketplace, we engage a multiplier effect that adds more jobs, more revenue and more vitality in communities across the country.

As a result of this program, we found innovative ways to not only help suppliers build scale, but also to promote collaboration in and between industries. The result is a creative exploration of ways to work together and grow their businesses. As we look ahead to our fourth class, we will focus on the continued evolvement of the program and the positive return on investment it brings to our business, our people and our suppliers.

Going forward, we?re exploring bringing DSDP to new geographies and markets. Canada was the first venture outside of the original U.S.-based program, and our first class of six there has graduated.? Our second, which grew to 11 suppliers, is currently in session. By expanding to countries such as the United Kingdom, India and South Africa, DSDP will further pave the way for a stronger supply chain, extended market penetration and more economically independent communities.

Accenture takes a wide view of diversity, and the Diverse Supplier Development Program demonstrates ?that. (AP) ? Corrupt and gorging itself at the trough of Algeria's vast oil wealth ? that's how most Algerians privately view the elites running the country. Yet few have been willing to say so publicly, until now.

New corruption scandals are shining a new spotlight on state oil company Sonatrach, which jointly with BP and Norway's Statoil runs the desert gas plant that was the scene of a bloody hostage standoff in January.

A recent anguished public plea by a former Sonatrach official shocked Algerians and raised hopes that the leadership will try to clean up the oil and gas sector in Africa's largest country.

There's plenty at stake: Algeria is also one of the continent's richest countries, as the No. 3 supplier of natural gas to Europe, with $190 billion in reserves, up $8 billion in the last year alone.

The Feb. 18 letter by former Sonatrach vice president Hocine Malti in the French-language Algerian daily El Watan broke the silence around the company. Addressing the shadowy leader of Algeria's intelligence service, it asks if he is really serious about investigating new bribery scandals involving Sonatrach and Italian and Canadian companies.

When Italian prosecutors in January announced an investigation into oil company ENI and subsidiary SAIPEM for allegedly paying ?197 million ($256.1 million) in bribes to secure an ?11 billion contract with Sonatrach, it provoked a firestorm in the Algerian media, until the North African country's justice system finally announced its own inquiry Feb. 10.

Malti, author of the "Secret History of Algerian Oil," scoffed that Algerian authorities were only following the lead of international investigators and wondered if Mohammed "Tewfik" Mediene, the feared head of the Department of Research and Security, would allow the real sources of corruption to be tried in court.

"Is it too much to dream that some of your fellow generals, certain ministers or corrupt businessmen ? members of the pyramid that you are on top of ? members of this fraternity, might also end up in front of justice?" he asked in the letter. "Or will it be like always, just the small fry are targeted by this new investigation?"

"Will we have to continue to listen for news from the Milan prosecutor to know the sad reality of our country, to discover how certain people, whom you know quite well, people you have come across in your long professional career, have gorged themselves on millions of dollars and euros of the country's oil revenues?" he added.

The response to the letter was swift. Energy Minister Youcef Yousfi promised that once an investigation was complete "we will take all necessary measures" against those harming the interests of the nation.

President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, who rarely appears in public, said in a written statement, "these revelations provoke our disgust and condemnation, but I trust the justice system of our country to bring clarity to the web of accusations and discover who is responsible."

Malti told The Associated Press by telephone from his home in France that he wrote the letter partly out of anger that Algeria had to rely on foreign prosecutors to reveal the extent of its own corruption and addressed it to the head of intelligence to shock people.

"It made a lot of noise because with this letter, I broke a taboo," he said. "The head of the DRS is an unapproachable figure in Algeria, at times we can't even pronounce (say) his name."

It is not the first time the state-owned hydrocarbon company, which provides Algeria with 97 percent of its hard currency earnings, has been enmeshed in scandal.

In 2010, its head, three of its vice presidents and the minister of energy were all fired in a corruption investigation run by Mediene's intelligence agency.

However, rather than restore faith in the country's corruption-fighting mechanism, the 2010 purge was widely seen as a chance to settle scores between the DRS and Bouteflika, since most of those fired were his close associates.

Algeria ranks 105 out of 176 in Transparency International's 2012 corruption index, and the occasional corruption investigation often just seems to be how the elites settle their scores, such as a string of revelations about prominent politicians in November, which observers said were linked to next year's presidential elections.

"I realize that people might be shocked by what is happening at Sonatrach ? these scandals are terrible and we condemn them as individual acts," Sonatrach head Abdelhamid Zerguine said on the radio Sunday, the anniversary of Algeria's 1971 nationalization of its oil industry from the French. He promised to fight further corruption "with utmost vigor," even while denying it was systemic.

The scale of the scandals is staggering. Nearly ?200 million ($260 million) was paid out by the Italians, according to the Milan prosecutor. ENI has pledged full cooperation with prosecutors in their investigations.

Meanwhile, according to a joint investigation by Canada's Globe and Mail newspaper and an Italian business paper published Feb. 22, Canadian company SNC-Lavalin paid a series of bribes of its own to secure a $1 billion engineering contract. Company spokeswoman Lilly Nguyen responded to queries about the case saying "to the best of our knowledge, SNC-Lavalin is not specifically under investigation in the Sonatrach matter."

With commissions on deals like this going to the highest levels of power, the Algerian press rarely reports about it ? until the subject is broached by the foreign media.

Malti, who was there at the founding of Sonatrach in 1963, estimated that the country was losing between $3 and 6 billion annually to corruption in the oil sector alone.

"If a judge says that an inquiry has opened or even a minister promises to take measures against 'people working against Algeria's interests,' I don't believe them," Mohammed Saidj, a professor of international relations at Algiers University, told the AP. "It's just words to appease a public opinion shocked when it hears about the corruption and billions of dollars stolen by high-level political and military officials, including those close to the president."

The chances of this situation changing are dim, considering how much the country relies on a single company.

In a chapter on Sonatrach in the 2012 book "Oil and Governance," John Entelis, an Algeria expert at New York's Fordham University, described the importance of a company established just a year after Algeria won its independence from France, and wrote, "Algeria's governing elite rely upon Sonatrach for revenue from which they gain power, patronage, and privileges."

Entelis told AP that the letter in El Watan shows that Algerians are increasingly able to complain about this system, even if that won't necessarily change things.

"This is the heart of the Algerian political system ? Sonatrach, the DRS, civil society in the form of ... willingness to make these things public. Some say this is what enables it to maintain itself instead of collapse," he said.
