US drone kills 5 militants in northern Pakistan

ISLAMABAD (AP) ? A missile launched from a U.S. drone struck a suspected militant hideout in a tribal region in northern Pakistan where allies of a powerful warlord were gathered Saturday, killing five of his supporters, Pakistani officials said.

The strike in North Waziristan against allies of Hafiz Gul Bahadur, a militant commander whose forces frequently target U.S. and other NATO troops in neighboring Afghanistan, comes amid speculation over whether Pakistan will launch an operation against militants in the tribal region.

The U.S. has pushed Pakistan repeatedly to take such a step and earlier this week U.S. Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta told The Associated Press that Pakistan was preparing an operation targeting the Pakistani Taliban in North Waziristan.

Pakistan has been reluctant to undertake an offensive there, saying its military is already overtaxed by fighting in other tribal areas and parts of Pakistan. But many in the U.S. believe Pakistan does not want to upset the many militant groups there such as the Haqqani network that could be useful allies in Afghanistan after foreign forces leave.

On Thursday, the top U.S. commander in the region, Gen. James Mattis, met with Pakistani army chief Gen. Ashfaq Parvez Kayani.

During the meeting the Pakistani general repeated his government's stance that it would undertake an operation in North Waziristan only if it coincides with Pakistan's interests and not in response to outside pressure, according to a military press release.

Drone attacks like Saturday's are very unpopular in Pakistan, where they are seen as a violation of the country's sovereignty and responsible for the deaths of innocent civilians. The U.S. maintains the targeted strikes are directed against militants and necessary to combat groups like al-Qaida.

Some Uzbek foreign fighters were among the dead in Saturday's strike, according to two Pakistan intelligence officials. Three people were also wounded, they said. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to media.

Meanwhile, five security officials died during a suicide bombing on a checkpoint in southern Pakistan.

Spokesman Murtaza Baig said the attacker detonated his explosives early on Saturday after he was stopped at the checkpoint in a Quetta suburb. The killed troops were members of Pakistan's paramilitary Frontier Corps.

Baluchistan province and its capital, Quetta, have been the scene of an insurgency by Baluch nationalists who are demanding greater rights and share from the income generated from gas and minerals extracted from the province. Various Baluch groups are blamed for attacks on the province's security forces and are suspected of targeting other ethnic groups in the region.

Islamist Taliban militants and the extremist group Lashker-e-Jhangvi are also active in the province.

SKorean chaebol boss sentenced to 4 years prison

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) ? The chairman of Hanwha Corp., one of South Korea's largest industrial conglomerates, was sentenced to four years in prison and fined 5.1 billion won ($4.5 million) for embezzlement in a ruling that experts say shows a tougher stance against wrongdoing by leaders of the country's mightiest companies.

Kim Seung-youn used his influence over Hanwha affiliates to aid his brother's near-bankrupt companies, which caused over 288 billion won in losses at the Hanwha-controlled businesses, Seoul Western District Court said in a statement Thursday. Hanwha is South Korea's 10th largest chaebol as the country's conglomerates are known.

The court also found Kim guilty of forcing Hanwha's affiliates to sell shares in an oil company to his sister at below-market prices to help his sister's attempt to acquire the company. He also dodged taxes by trading shares under his employees' names.

According to documents that authorities confiscated from Hanwha headquarters, employees were instructed to regard Kim as a god-like figure and "an object of absolute obedience." The company's authoritarian culture allowed Kim to steal corporate funds, the court said. It was not his first scrape with the law. He was pardoned in 2008 after a conviction for beating a worker.

Following Thursday's ruling, Kim was taken into custody to start serving his prison sentence, a surprising development in South Korea where chaebol bosses are national icons and often regarded as beyond the reach of the law.

According to Chaebul.com, a website on South Korea's leading conglomerates, courts gave suspended sentences to the seven executives from the top 10 chaebol who were convicted of crimes since 1990. Presidential pardons have often followed convictions of chaebol bosses.

"The chief of South Korea's top 10 business being immediately jailed after the first ruling, that is an important sign that shows a change in the South Korean society," said Kim Sang-jo, a professor of economics at Hansung University.

The lenient punishments and presidential pardons given to the prominent business figures stem from a perception that took root in the 1960s that their absence from society could undermine the economy. Family-owned industrial groups helped develop South Korea from the ruins of its 1950-1953 war with North Korea into Asia's fourth-largest economy and one of the wealthiest.

"There is an ingrained perception that if people like Lee Kun-hee get arrested, South Korea's economy could be shaken," said Kim, the professor.

Hanwha spokesman Kim Young-sik said by phone that Kim Seung-youn and a dozen other Hanwha employees who were found guilty will appeal the court's ruling.

Hanwha's Kim, along with Samsung Chairman Lee Kun-hee and Chung Mong-koo of Hyundai Motor, were pardoned by President Lee Myung-bak in 2008. Kim had been found guilty of beating a worker at a bar with a steel pipe after a scuffle with his son.

Kim took the top job at Hanwha in 1981, succeeding is late father and Hanwha founder to run the industrial group that has wide-ranging businesses in explosives, chemicals, trade and construction.

Pan-fried meat increases risk of prostate cancer, new study finds

ScienceDaily (Aug. 16, 2012) ? Research from the University of Southern California (USC) and Cancer Prevention Institute of California (CPIC) found that cooking red meats at high temperatures, especially pan-fried red meats, may increase the risk of advanced prostate cancer by as much as 40 percent.

Mariana Stern, associate professor of preventive medicine at the Keck School of Medicine of USC, led analyses for the study, "Red meat and poultry, cooking practices, genetic susceptibility and risk of prostate cancer: Results from the California Collaborative Prostate Cancer Study." The study, which is available online in the journal Carcinogenesis, provides important new evidence on how red meat and its cooking practices may increase the risk for prostate cancer.

Previous studies have emphasized an association between diets high in red meat and risk of prostate cancer, but evidence is limited. Attention to cooking methods of red meat, however, shows the risk of prostate cancer may be a result of potent chemical carcinogens formed when meats are cooked at high temperatures.

Researchers examined pooled data from nearly 2,000 men who participated in the California Collaborative Prostate Cancer Study, a multiethnic, case-control study conducted in the San Francisco Bay Area by Esther John, CPIC senior research scientist, and in Los Angeles by Sue A. Ingles, associate professor of preventive medicine at the Keck School of Medicine of USC. Study participants completed a comprehensive questionnaire that evaluated amount and type of meat intake, including poultry and processed red meat. Information regarding cooking practices (e.g., pan-frying, oven-broiling and grilling) was obtained using color photographs that displayed the level of doneness. More than 1,000 of the men included in the study were diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer.

"We found that men who ate more than 1.5 servings of pan-fried red meat per week increased their risk of advanced prostate cancer by 30 percent," Stern said. "In addition, men who ate more than 2.5 servings of red meat cooked at high temperatures were 40 percent more likely to have advanced prostate cancer."

When considering specific types of red meats, hamburgers -- but not steak -- were linked to an increased risk of prostate cancer, especially among Hispanic men. "We speculate that these findings are a result of different levels of carcinogen accumulation found in hamburgers, given that they can attain higher internal and external temperatures faster than steak," Stern added.

Researchers also found that men with diets high in baked poultry had a lower risk of advanced prostate cancer, while consumption of pan-fried poultry was associated with increased risk. Stern noted that pan-frying, regardless of meat type, consistently led to an increased risk of prostate cancer. The same pattern was evident in Stern's previous research, which found that fish cooked at high temperatures, particularly pan-fried, increased the risk of prostate cancer.

The researchers do not know why pan-frying poses a higher risk for prostate cancer, but they suspect it is due to the formation of the DNA-damaging carcinogens -- heterocyclic amines (HCAs) -- during the cooking of red meat and poultry. HCAs are formed when sugars and amino acids are cooked at higher temperatures for longer periods of time. Other carcinogens, such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are formed during the grilling or smoking of meat. When fat from the meat drips on an open flame, the rising smoke leaves deposits of PAHs on the meat. There is strong experimental evidence that HCAs and PAHs contribute to certain cancers, including prostate cancer.

"The observations from this study alone are not enough to make any health recommendations, but given the few modifiable risk factors known for prostate cancer, the understanding of dietary factors and cooking methods are of high public health relevance," said Stern.

Co-authors of the study include Amit Joshi who received his Ph.D. in molecular epidemiology from the Department of Preventive Medicine at the Keck School of Medicine; Chelsea Catsburg, Juan Pablo Lewinger and Sue Ingles of USC; and CPIC's Esther John and Jocelyn Koo. The study was supported in part by the Prostate Cancer Foundation, American Cancer Society, and grant 5P30 ES07048 from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences and the National Cancer Institute.
