UNION CITY -- Cemetery employees discovered this week that vandals had slathered nearly 150 headstones with vegetable oil at the memorial park on the Union City-Hayward border, police said.
The incident took place at the Chapel of the Chimes Memorial Park, 32992 Mission Blvd., according to Union City police.
Chapel of the Chimes General Manager Harry Blakeman said a grounds worker noticed the vandalism Thursday in an outdoor garden called Sanctuary Circle.
It wasn't immediately known if any suspects had been arrested. Initial police reports show the oil was thought to be clean and unused motor oil.
But Blakeman said authorities later determined the substance was vegetable oil.
"The headstones will probably cleaned off this afternoon," Blakeman said Friday, adding that it was the first time he knew of that the cemetery had been vandalized.
