'The Bible' series may head to theaters

By Philiana Ng, The Hollywood Reporter

Joe Alblas / A&E Television Network

Joseph protects Mary in History's "The Bible."

History's record-breaking 10-part miniseries "The Bible" could be headed to movie theaters.

"We're cutting a movie version right now, a three-hour version of Jesus and (we have) many, many offers from theaters globally," executive producer Mark Burnett told The Hollywood Reporter?on Monday at NBCUniversal summer press day.? Burnett said the movie version will have a big focus on the Resurrection. He is eying a fall release.

Burnett also shared that there is a distinct possibility that more stories will be told for "The Bible," a passion project for he and wife Roma Downey.

'Bible' producers talk Satan controversy with Oprah

"It's never actually stopped, but I do have scripts in my bag that I just received today for what's next," he told THR.

Should the story continue, the stories would fall "in the same world," Burnett said. "We feel there is a void, and we're filling that void."

"The Bible" debuted to 13.1 million viewers March 3 and wrapped up Easter Sunday with 11.7 million viewers. Internationally, "The Bible" beat hockey in Canada; it was tops in Spain, and it had a 37 share in Portugal.

For Burnett, he was confident the mini would be a success, crediting God as a vital force. "It's a God voice," Burnett said. "It's clearly a calling; clearly, we felt it was something we had to do, and too many things happened to explain it any other way. It's a juggernaut, and it's not going to slow down."

Mark Burnett's 'The Bible' becomes top-selling miniseries on Blu-Ray and DVD

"The Bible," like History's "Hatfields & McCoys," already has proven a valuable asset to the cable network as it looks to bolster its original programming. History used "Bible" as a lead-in for its first original scripted drama, "Vikings," which already has been renewed for a second season.

"The Bible" is already the fastest-selling DVD for a miniseries ever.

Egypt probes prosecutor who ordered drunk flogged

ASSIUT, Egypt (AP) ? Egyptian authorities are suspending and investigating a provincial prosecutor who ordered a man flogged 80 times for public drunkenness.

Spokesman Mahmoud el-Hefnawi of the prosecutor general's office says the country's top attorney ordered Hussein Anani's decision cancelled and referred him to a judicial investigation.

Anani had cited verses from the Quran in his ruling.

Anani's decision late Sunday surprised police officers in the southern province of Minya who refused to carry out the order. Public intoxication is a criminal offense in Egypt, with penalties ranging from small fines to around three months in prison.

Egypt's penal code does not mention flogging, however.

Rights lawyer Anas Sayid Saleh says that only judges, not prosecutors, have the right to order punishments.

FBI: We had no contact with suspect after bombing

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The FBI is disputing a claim by the mother of the suspected Boston bombers, who said the bureau had spoken to the older brother after the bombs exploded at last Monday's marathon.

At FBI headquarters in Washington, spokesman Michael Kortan says the bureau's 2011 interview with Tamerlan Tsarnaev (tsahr-NEYE'-ehv) was the only FBI contact with him.

Kortan is standing by the bureau's public statement from Friday in which the bureau described that interview. That statement says the FBI did not learn of the identities of the bombing suspects, Tamerlan and his brother, Dzhokhar (joh-KHAR'), until Friday, the day Tamerlan was killed.

The brothers' parents in Russia have insisted that the FBI continued to monitor Tamerlan after the 2011 interview and say both of their sons were set up.

Low-dose aspirin stymies proliferation of two breast cancer lines

Apr. 21, 2013 ? Regular use of low-dose aspirin may prevent the progression of breast cancer, according to results of a study by researchers at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Kansas City, Mo., and the University of Kansas Medical Center.

The study found that aspirin slowed the growth of breast cancer cell lines in the lab and significantly reduced the growth of tumors in mice. The age-old headache remedy also exhibits the ability to prevent tumor cells from spreading.

The lead author of the study, Gargi Maity, a postdoctoral fellow who works in the cancer research unit at the VA Medical Center, will present the team's findings on Sunday, April 21, at the annual meeting of the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, which is being held in conjunction with the Experimental Biology 2013 conference in Boston. The senior author is Sushanta Banerjee, director of the cancer research unit and a professor at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Kan.

The role of aspirin, or acetylsalicylic acid, in preventing and treating cancer has intrigued researchers since the late 1980s, when an Australian study found that people who regularly used aspirin were less likely to develop colorectal cancer. Aspirin use also has been shown to reduce the risk of squamous cell esophageal cancer and prostate cancer.

Anecdotal evidence indicated that breast cancer was less likely to return in women who took aspirin to lower their risk of heart attack or stroke. But the science behind this relationship is not well understood.

The VA study found that aspirin may interfere with cancer cells' ability to find an aggressive, more primordial state. In the mouse model the researchers used, cancer cells treated with aspirin formed no or only partial stem cells, which are believed to fuel the growth and spread of tumors.

Banerjee, a professor of medicine in division of hematology and oncology, says first-line chemotherapy treatments do not destroy stem cells. Eventually, the tumor will grow again. "If you don't target the stemness, it is known you will not get any effect," he says. "It will relapse."

In lab tests, aspirin blocked the proliferation of two different breast cancer lines. One of the lines tested is often called triple-negative breast cancer, a less common but more difficult treat form of the disease. "We are mainly interested in triple negative breast cancer, because the prognosis is very poor," Banerjee says.

Triple-negative breast cancers, which will be addressed in a special thematic program at the ASBMB annual meeting, lack receptors for estrogen, progesterone and Her2. Aspirin also may improve the effectiveness of current treatments for women whose breast cancers are hormone-receptor positive. In the team's study, aspirin enhanced the effect of tamoxifen, the usual drug therapy for hormone-receptor positive breast cancer.

Aspirin is used in the treatment of a number of different conditions. Banerjee says its ability to attack multiple metabolic pathways is what makes it potentially useful in the fight against cancer. "Cancer is not a single-gene disease," he says. "Multiple genes are involved."

Aspirin is a medicine with side effects, including gastrointestinal bleeding. Researchers will continue to explore if the positive effects of regular use of the drug outweigh the risks. In 2012, the National Cancer Institute asked scientists to design studies that would illuminate the mechanisms by which aspirin and drugs with other uses appear to reduce the risk of cancer or improve the prognosis for those diagnosed with the disease. Banerjee says his lab will apply for one of the grants.

Other co-authors at the cancer research unit include Snigdha Banerjee, associate professor of medicine in hematology and oncology at KU, and postdoctoral scholars Archana De and Amlan Das.

Kerry pushes Turkey-Israel rapprochement

ISTANBUL (AP) ? U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry is wrapping up a 24-hour visit to Istanbul with talks aimed at improving ties between Turkey and Israel and pushing ahead with Mideast peace efforts.

American officials say Kerry will use meetings Sunday with Turkey's foreign minister and the Palestinian president to urge the Turks to make good on pledges to normalize relations with Israel and explore ways to relaunch peace talks between the Palestinians and Israelis.

President Barack Obama has made both issues foreign policy priorities for his second term. During a trip to Israel in February, Obama secured pledges from Turkey and Israel to restore badly strained ties.

Earlier Sunday in Istanbul, Kerry announced that the Obama administration is doubling its non-lethal assistance to the Syrian opposition to $250 million.

OpEdNews - Article: American Education

A Symptom of a Failed System

The Atlanta Public Schools cheating scandal finally brings to light what I saw coming years ago. I had predicted that the whole concept of Standardized Testing would lead? inevitably to cheating, not only on the part of the victimized student but on the part of teachers, principals and even administrations. The temptation proved to be too great.?

An investigation by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation released in July 2011 found that 44 out of 56 schools cheated on state-administered standardized tests. More than 150? teachers and principals confessed to have fixed incorrect answers on test papers. Their excuse was that the pressure to "meet targets" set by administrations with the threat of? negative evaluation or termination if they did not was simply too great. And it's not just Atlanta. We now find ourselves reading newspaper headlines like: ?

Massive Cheating Scandal? Rock Schools Nationwide

Is it any wonder then that, of the top 50 countries rated by the Economist Intelligence Unit, American education ranks a dismal 17 th. ?But, the sorry truth is that scandals like? these are just symptoms of a greater and more devastating disease. We are faced with a failed system not only in its function, but more importantly in its purpose. ? ? ? ?

With three of ten high school and four of ten college freshmen failing to graduate, our educational system is obviously failing. The question to be asked is not why the drop-outs? have failed in our educational system, but why the educational system has failed in its obligation to the drop-outs. To answer this question we must first arrive at a revised? understanding of the purpose of education. ? In reviewing ?popular remedies for the alarming drop-out rate, the question of why we educate must be addressed before we can? consider any rational question of how. ?Rarely, if ever, is the question of why addressed or even mentioned. It is simply assumed that the purpose is, first and foremost, that it will? lead to a higher income. Then there is the societal advantage of an orderly and stable status quo. This whole approach ignores what should be the true purpose of an education.

Education should be designed to provide opportunities for individual self-fulfillment. Indeed, the current system leans more to indoctrination than to education. It is a system? designed to meet the needs of the society as opposed to one that meets the personal needs of the individual student. ? It becomes a system designed to equip the corporate? world and its bottom-line mentality with an adequate work force and to provide society, with its questionable objectives a sufficient number of sycophants to maintain social? stability. What its purpose should be is to equip the student with an adequate means of gratifying his potential for personal achievement and fulfillment in concert with what innate? talents he may possess, This is the only source of true happiness. A truly just society should be one that addresses the needs of its individual citizens, as opposed to the needs of? a society that in turn ignores those individual needs. The creation of a society that allows for each individual the maximum possibly fulfillment and happiness, should, therefore, be? the broader aim and purpose of education. ?

Another significant danger of the present system is that it seems to have forsaken Socrates. For Socrates, the mere passing on and acceptance of traditional thought and? practice, which is what most of the current curricula consists of, is not education. Not only does such a practice tend to suppress the innate curiosity the first grader brings to? class, but it discourages the critical thinking that Socrates insisted must lie at the very foundation of education. Add to this the fact that in our modern world, the inability to think? critically will ultimately cause humanitarian advancement to lag dangerously behind technological advancement, ignoring the need for adequate ethical checks and balances? necessary to insure a safe and intelligent progression. Unfortunately with the current system, critical thinking on the part of the student, is actually suppressed because it r epresents a threat to the teacher's commandment from above to simply impart knowledge in compliance with standard objectives to be measured by the accursed standardized? testing. One amazing thought is that, ironically, this could lead us to recognize the necessity of asking why before we consider asking how.

So, where do we begin? The first step may be to identify and hold accountable those responsible for the failure. Unfortunately, the decisions for education in the present system? are made by two professional practitioners, educators and politicians. The system works this way. The educators, who are nothing more than graduates of the failed system, are? pressured and threatened by the politicians who know nothing about education, but who provide the necessary funding. This is a prescription for continued failure. To even begin a?

complete overhaul, which the situation demands, our public school system, one of Americas great promises, must be reclaimed by the public. This will prove most difficult because? this same public, is unfortunately also a product of the system. It must realize, for the sake of their deprived children, that the true purpose of education is to provide them with? the opportunity to fulfill their intrinsic desires rather than to indoctrinate them into a neurotic society. There can be no other source for their true happiness.

EPA blamed for delaying asbestos study in Montana

BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) ? Internal investigators faulted the Environmental Protection Agency on Thursday over years of delays in completing health studies needed to guide the cleanup of a Montana mining town where hundreds of people have died from asbestos exposure.

The EPA's Office of Inspector General said in a report that the studies are necessary to determine whether expensive, ongoing cleanup efforts are working in the town of Libby.

The area near the northwest corner of the state, about 50 miles from the U.S.-Canada border, was declared a public health emergency in 2009, a decade after federal regulators first responded to concerns over asbestos dust that came from a W.R. Grace vermiculite mine.

The vermiculite was used as insulation in millions of U.S. homes.

At least $447 million has been spent on the cleanup.

The town remains under a first-of-its kind public health emergency declaration issued by then-EPA administrator Lisa Jackson in 2009. The deaths are expected to continue for decades due to the long latency of asbestos-related diseases.

Meanwhile, the cleanup grinds on. At least 80 and up to 100 properties in town are queued up for work this year, according to the EPA.

Several hundred properties still need to be addressed, and that list could grow significantly.

Work on the mine site outside town has barely begun. It closed in 1990 and remains the responsibility of W.R. Grace.

Meanwhile, EPA Acting Regional Administrator Howard Cantor said Thursday that the agency strongly disagrees with much of the Inspector General's conclusions.

Cantor said the risk and toxicity studies are complex endeavors that need to be done properly to make sure Libby's residents are protected.

He added that the cleanup has already addressed 1,700 homes and commercial properties and 1.2 million tons of contaminated soil have been removed.

"The rigor with which we're undertaking efforts to protect public health and the environment have not been affected by these delays," he said.

Patients with surgical complications provide greater hospital profit-margins

Apr. 16, 2013 ? Privately insured surgical patients who had a complication provided hospitals with a 330% higher profit margin than those without a complication, according to new research from Ariadne Labs, a joint center for health system innovation at Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH) and Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH), Boston Consulting Group, Texas Health Resources, and Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary. Medicare patients with a complication produced a 190% higher margin. The findings mean that, for hospital managers, efforts to reduce surgical complications could result in substantially worsened financial performance.

The study appears in the April 17, 2013 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA).

"We found clear evidence that reducing harm and improving quality is perversely penalized in our current health care system," said Sunil Eappen, the lead author and chief medical officer of Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary.

"It's been known that hospitals are not rewarded for quality. But it hadn't been recognized exactly how much more money they make when harm is done," said senior author Atul Gawande, director of Ariadne Labs, professor in the Department of Health Policy and Management at HSPH and a surgeon at BWH.

An estimated $400 billion is spent on surgical procedures each year in the U.S. While effective methods to reduce complications have been identified, hospitals have been slow to implement them. Financial incentives may be a reason. The goal of the study was therefore to evaluate the hospital costs and revenues associated with having one or more major complications with surgical patients covered by four primary insurance types -- private insurance, Medicare, Medicaid, and self-payment.

The researchers analyzed data from 34,256 surgical inpatients discharged in 2010 in a non-profit, 12-hospital system in the southern U.S. They looked at ten severe, preventable surgical complications and the contribution margin -- revenue minus variable expenses -- per patient. A total of 1,820 procedures were identified with at least one complication.

The results showed that, for privately insured patients, complications were associated with a $39,017 higher contribution margin per patient ($55,953 vs. $16,936). For Medicare patients, the contribution margin per patient was higher by $1,749 ($3,687 vs. $1,880). For Medicaid and self-payment, complications were associated with significantly lower contribution margins than those without complications.

What that means, say the researchers, is that who pays for patients' care determines the financial implications of surgical complications. In this hospital system, private insurers covered 40% of patients, Medicare covered 45%, Medicaid covered 4% and 6% were self-pay, a breakdown that is comparable to the average U.S. hospital in 2010. Overall in this hospital system, complications were associated with a more than $8,000 higher contribution margin per patient.

At safety-net hospitals, which treat patients primarily covered by Medicaid or self-pay, reducing complications could improve financial performance. However, the study shows that at most U.S. hospitals, programs to reduce complications would worsen their financial performance.

"This is clear indication that health care payment reform is necessary," said Gawande. "Hospitals should gain, not lose, financially from reducing harm."

The research was funded through support from the Boston Consulting Group and from Texas Health Resources.

Pakistan bears brunt of Iranian earthquake, 35 killed

By Gul Yousafzai

QUETTA, Pakistan (Reuters) - A powerful earthquake struck a border area of southeast Iran on Tuesday killing at least 35 people in neighboring Pakistan, destroying hundreds of houses and shaking buildings as far away as India and Gulf Arab states.

Communications with the sparsely-populated desert and mountain region were largely cut off, making it difficult to assess Iranian casualties. But an Iranian provincial governor later said there were no reports of deaths there so far.

"Our staff were in a meeting and we felt the ground shake," Saleh Mangi, Programme Unit Manager for Plan International in the Pakistani town of Thatta, was quoted as saying by the British office of the children's charity.

"It was horrible - we felt the movement in the chairs and even the cupboards were shaking. This is the strongest quake I have felt since the 1980s."

Pakistani officials said at least 30 people were killed and 150 injured in the town of Mashkeel in the southwestern Pakistani province of Baluchistan, which borders Iran.

Mohammed Ashraf, head of a health center in Mashkeel, said several hundred houses in the town had caved in. Three women and two children were also killed when their mud house collapsed in the Baluchistan district of Panjgur.

"The earthquake has killed at least five people in Panjgur," said Ali Imran, an official at the government disaster-response unit in Quetta, Baluchistan's main city.

Pakistan's army said it had deployed troops and helicopters to ferry tents, medicines and medical teams to Mashkeel.

IRAN RELATIVELY UNSCATHED

Iran appeared to have emerged relatively unscathed. National media reported that 27 people were injured and that the significant depth was the likely reason for the relatively low level of damage from a 7.8 magnitude quake.

Soon after the quake, an Iranian official told Reuters he expected hundreds of dead and state media quoted unconfirmed reports of 40 fatalities in Iran.

But Hatam Narouyi, governor of Iran's Sistan and Baluchistan province, said there were "no fatalities", the student news agency (ISNA) reported.

The U.S. Geological Survey, in a revised bulletin, said the quake hit at 1044 GMT at a depth of 82 km (51 miles). The epicenter was 198 km (123 miles) southeast of the city of Zahedan and 250 km northwest of Turbat in Pakistan.

People in the Iranian city of Zahedan poured into the streets when it struck, Fars news agency reported. Officials in Saravan, the nearest city to the epicenter, said there had been no serious damage.

Iranian Red Crescent official Morteza Moradipour said emergency crews, including dog teams to sniff through the debris for any buried survivors, had reached the area.

"Because of the strength of the earthquake we had expected to see significant damage in residential areas but the quake was at a depth of 95 km and therefore the extent of the damage was on par with earthquakes measuring magnitude 4," he said.

The U.N.'s Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said it was in contact with authorities in Iran and "stands ready to assist upon request", a spokesman said.

NUCLEAR RISK

It was the second big quake to hit Iran in a week. On April 9, a powerful 6.3 magnitude quake struck close to the Bushehr nuclear power station, killing 37 people, injuring 850 and devastating two villages.

Most of Iran's nuclear-related facilities are located in central Iran or its west, including Bushehr, its nuclear power plant, which sits on the Gulf coast. Iran says safety standards at Bushehr are good, but some Western experts have their doubts.

"It (the quake epicenter) is far from Bushehr and other nuclear-related facilities," Iran expert Ali Vaez of the International Crisis Group think-tank said.

"However, the recent tremors are ominous reminders of how earthquake prone Iran's terrain truly is and how critical it is for the Iranian government to be prepared for a nuclear emergency."

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said Iran's nuclear authority had informed it that there was no damage to the Bushehr power plant or other facilities.

Iran sits on major geological faultlines and has suffered several devastating earthquakes, including a 6.6 magnitude quake in 2003 that flattened the city of Bam, in Iran's far southeast, killing more than 25,000 people.

This quake also shook tall buildings in India's capital New Delhi, sending people running into the streets. People also evacuated buildings in Qatar and Dubai.

"I was working and my work station was shaking," said Viidhu Sekhri, 35, an underwriter at a New Delhi insurance company. "Then it was a bit shaky so we just rushed outside."

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) ? Caroline Shaw isn't your typical Pulitzer Prize for music winner.

The violinist and vocalist is just 30, a freelance musician in New York, a grad student at Princeton University and an all-around music lover who is combining new ideas with old to make something the Pulitzer foundation found enchanting.

"I think up to now people have known me as a violinist and then more so as a singer," Shaw said in a phone interview from New York where she lives. "I guess now people are going to know me as a composer ? I guess more than I'm used to."

She won a Pulitzer often given to older composers and musicians for her composition "Partita for 8 Voices," an a cappella piece written for her vocal octet Roomful of Teeth that's both modern and steeped in the Baroque tradition. It was released on Roomful of Teeth's self-titled debut album last October on New Amsterdam Records.

The Pulitzer committee wrote of Shaw's work: "a highly polished and inventive a cappella work uniquely embracing speech, whispers, sighs, murmurs, wordless melodies and novel vocal effects."

Shaw writes of the four-part suite on her website: "Partita is a simple piece. Born of a love of surface and structure, of the human voice, of dancing and tired ligaments, of music, and of our basic desire to draw a line from one point to another." She says the piece was inspired by Sol LeWitt's "Wall Drawing 305," an installation piece she saw at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art, where Roomful of Teeth sets up shop for a few weeks every summer.

Shaw will receive $10,000 for the prize, and plenty of attention. The category's other finalists included previous winner Aaron Jay Kernis for classical composition "Pieces of Winter Sky" and jazz musician Wadada Leo Smith for "Ten Freedom Summers," a 10-part examination of the civil rights movement.

The North Carolina-born Shaw was on the way Monday evening for rehearsal with the American Contemporary Music Ensemble, another group that inspires the composer in her.

"There's a bit of a new guard of contemporary classical musicians in New York and we play a lot of different kinds of music together," Shaw said. "We do pop studio sessions and we'll also play John Cage and more avant-garde work. We're developing a language of music that comes with a lot of different styles, different kinds of work."

Gift card as a tax refund: a good idea?

TurboTax has an offer that lets you accept your tax refund in the form of an Amazon gift card. Should you do it??

By Trent Hamm,?Guest blogger / April 13, 2013

A PC displays a TurboTax online tax computer program in Palo Alto, Calif. TurboTax has an offer that allows you to take your tax refund in the form of a gift card, but Hamm mostly recommends against it.

Recently, I was using TurboTax to do my taxes for the year. For the last several years, I?ve been paying in a bit each year rather than receiving a return because I?m self-employed, which means I have to handle my own personal taxes and I usually make my quarterly tax payments on the lower end of what?s reasonable.

The Simple Dollar is a blog for those of us who need both cents and sense: people fighting debt and bad spending habits while building a financially secure future and still affording a latte or two. Our busy lives are crazy enough without having to compare five hundred mutual funds ? we just want simple ways to manage our finances and save a little money.

Anyway, one of the things I usually do with TurboTax is that once my taxes are actually finished, I?ll play around with scenarios a bit. What would things look like if I made $10,000 less this year? Would I get a refund? What if we gave more to charity? How would that have affected things? It?s essentially a big personal finance calculator that?s already set up with all of our data, so it?s really useful for looking at things like that.

As I was doing this, I discovered something interesting. TurboTax has an offer embedded in it that will give you an Amazon.com gift card in lieu of your tax return. If you accept that, they?ll add an additional 5% to the balance of that card.

This isn?t the first time I?ve seen this type of ?gift card as payment? offer. Coinstar kiosks usually offer this type of arrangement, where you?ll get more ?value? in the form of a gift card than if you simply receive cash. A few banks, such as SmartyPig, also have options where you can receive the balance of your account in the form of a gift card with an additional ?bonus? added to the value of that card.

It?s an interesting offer, both for the institution making the offer and for the customer.

For the institution, they?re able to acquire gift cards from Amazon at a slight discount of their face value. Then, they pass along some of that value to the customer (keeping some of that difference

For the customer, it offers an additional option when receiving your payment, and choice is usually a good thing. The question really boils down to whether or not receiving a gift card as payment is really worth it for the customer.

The only time that you should consider a gift card as payment is if there?s significant additional value placed on the gift card and you?re actually going to use the card in the near future and you?re using the card for something reasonable.

Let?s break down these three elements.

First, is the gift card giving you additional value? If your choice is between cash and a gift card with the same face value, take the cash every single time. That?s obvious. The only time a gift card should be under consideration is if the face value of the gift card is higher than the cash option.

Most of the time, your gift card option will have a higher face value than the cash option. Most companies realize that most customers won?t go for the gift card without some incentive, so this aspect is almost a given.

Second, are you actually going to use the gift card in the near future? It?s very easy to put a gift card aside and forget about using it until you find it two years later (at which point, it might be expired). A forgotten gift card can easily be lost or thrown away on accident.

The best gift card is one you?re going to use quite quickly while it?s still fresh in your mind. Will you actually use that card in the near future? Or are you at risk of misplacing that card?

Finally, are you going to use the card for something reasonable? An Amazon gift card isn?t just an excuse to go buy random things. If you?re going to just blow the money on trivial things, it really doesn?t matter whether you choose the gift card or not.

If the presence of the gift card is tempting you to spend it on something purely useless, while the cash might be put to better use in your life, get the cash. If you can actually use the gift card for something worthwhile, such as buying household supplies or picking up a gift for someone, the card is probably a good choice.

If you?re not saying ?yes? to all three of these criteria, you should be getting your payment in the form of cash, not in the form of a gift card.

Man arrested after Miami students sickened by brownies

MIAMI (Reuters) - Police arrested a 22-year-old man on drug charges on Thursday after nine Miami high school students were hospitalized after eating what officials described as brownies containing an unidentified substance.

Authorities charged Dionisio Lockridge with possession of marijuana and cocaine and found brownies similar to the ones eaten by the students during a search in his house, officials said.

Paramedics were called to the Miami Coral Park Senior High School on Thursday shortly after classes started when several students complained of feeling ill.

The students were taken to the hospital as a precautionary measure, said John Schuster, a spokesman for the Miami-Dade County public school system.

Police are conducting tests to identify the substance in the brownies that sickened the students, Schuster said.

British Euroskeptics claim Thatcher, but was she in their camp?

Though held up today by British Euroskeptics as an icon, the late prime minister left a legacy in Europe that is not as one-sided as it might at first appear.

By Jason Walsh,?Correspondent / April 11, 2013

British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and West German Chancellor Helmut Kohl during a press conference in the Frankfurt City Hall in Frankfurt in Feb. 1989. Though an icon of modern Euroskeptics, Mrs. Thatcher's relationship with Europe was more complex and contradictory than she is now portrayed.

Today, the late British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher is an icon of the euroskeptic right, whose antipathy to everything European has emboldened not only generations of Conservative Party lawmakers, but also the United Kingdom Independence Party now nipping at its heels.

Indeed, one of the moments that most contributed to her not undeserved reputation for recalcitrance centered upon the expansion of Europe's powers. Addressing then European Commission President Jacques Delors' desire to make the European Parliament into Europe's primary democratic institution, with the Commission as the executive and the Council of Ministers as senate, she famously declared "No, no, no!"

But despite being viewed as an anti-European firebrand, Mrs. Thatcher's European legacy, marked by contradiction and compromise, is not as simple and one-sided as it might at first appear.

A shaper of modern Europe

Neither Thatcher's belligerent style nor her deeply-held feelings of British nationalism or desire for Anglo-American harmony meant she refused to deal with the EU. In 1987, for instance, she signed the Single European Act and in 1990 agreed, albeit reluctantly, to join the Exchange Rate Mechanism that eventually led to the creation of the euro currency.

Stephen Booth, research director at Open Europe, a think thank based in Brussels and London that advocates a non-federal EU of nation states, says Thatcher's vision for the EU was much closer to that proposed by his organization than many now realize.

"She became more euroskeptic as she left office. Things like the single [European] market were very much in line with her vision," he says.

Thatcher's ambivalence toward Europe caused a deep split in her party that so damaged the government of her successor, John Major, that many believe it contributed to keeping the Conservatives out of power for a generation. In the face of an EU in economic crisis and the single European currency on the ropes, some now argue she was ahead of her time.

"Her contribution was to liberalize Europe," says Booth. "In a way, she exported her ideas to Europe. [Current British PM] David Cameron is, like Conservative Prime Ministers before him, trying to renegotiate Europe around the nation state."

And praise for her ideas is now coming from an unexpected direction: the European press. Most of the continental European center-right has long been pro-EU, but a new skepticism is in the air.?

Italian newspaper Libero says Thatcher's passing leaves Italy alone in a "Merkel-euro nightmare," denouncing European federalism as a faith-based project. Estonia's Postimees hails her anti-communism and support for free-market policies. Germany's Die Welt worries, however, that her euroskepticism may yet split her party in two.

Defense of the nation state

Joseph Cohen, a philosopher who teaches on issues around sovereignty at University College Dublin, says Thatcher's greatest legacy in Europe was to defend the traditions of European nation states.

"Her legacy is to mark the impossibility of a Europe in which there is an EU citizenship over and above national citizenship. In this sense she was extremely clear-sighted. There cannot be a United States of Europe precisely because of the very deep and singular history of each nation, and therefore the history of these relationships is the history of Europe."

She was not entirely correct, however, says Dr. Cohen.

"Where she was not foresighted was that, for worse or for better, what drives frontiers today is not so much these traditions, but economics."

And her nationalism was out of step with European thinking at the time, and may have contributed to her resistance to a result of the most significant Europe-wide event of her premiership: the collapse of the Eastern Bloc of Soviet satellite states, in particular the 1989 breaching of the Berlin Wall.

An ardent anti-communist, she joyously celebrated the end of what her close political ally US President Ronald Reagan called "the Evil Empire," and is credited by conservatives with playing a role in communism's decline.

But Thatcher objected to German reunification. Germany's then-Chancellor Helmut Kohl was "capable of anything," she said, according to a French diplomatic cable revealed several years ago. Her fear may not have been grounded solely in "Little Englandism," so much as fear of the economic might of industrial Germany.

(Mr. Kohl, speaking to Reuters, Monday remained magnanimous, saying of his late rival: "You could only speak of her with great respect, even if on some things you were of a different opinion on one point or another.")

And her nationalism appeared to contain an element of colonialism, says the Paris-born Cohen, who says his first memory of Thatcher was Britain waging war against Argentina.

"We were growing-up in the feverish build-up to '92 [the year the EU's Maastricht Treaty was signed]. We were all going to be the same, use the same money, no borders, and we didn't understand how it was possible for a European to defend a form of colonialism."

BlackBerry to ask regulators to probe report on returns

By Euan Rocha and Emily Flitter

TORONTO/NEW YORK (Reuters) - BlackBerry plans to ask securities regulators in Canada and the United States to probe what it said is a "false and misleading" report that consumer return rates for BlackBerry's new Z10 smartphone have been especially high.

The Canadian company, which has pinned its turnaround hopes on its new BlackBerry 10 line of smartphones, went on the offensive on Friday after the report from Boston-based research and investment firm Detwiler Fenton sent its stock tumbling on Thursday.

BlackBerry said return rates for its flagship Z10 devices have been at, or below, its forecasts and in line with industry norms.

"To suggest otherwise is either a gross misreading of the data or a willful manipulation," Chief Executive Thorsten Heins said in a statement. "Such a conclusion is absolutely without basis and BlackBerry will not leave it unchallenged."

BlackBerry said Detwiler Fenton had so far refused to share its report or its methods. It said it would present a formal request for an investigation to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and to the Ontario Securities Commission, which is Canada's major securities regulator, over the next few days.

Detwiler has had run-ins with regulators in the past, documents reviewed by Reuters show. But none of the cases involved questions about the accuracy of Detwiler's research or were linked to BlackBerry.

The OSC said it would review the matter once it receives a formal complaint.

"After the first 14 days, quality performance of the Z10 has been in line with similar devices we've launched," said Debra Lewis, a spokeswoman for Verizon Wireless.

A spokeswoman for Detwiler did not respond to a phone call and an email from Reuters seeking comment. The director of research also did not respond to a call seeking comment.

"We believe key retail partners have seen a significant increase in Z10 returns to the point where, in several cases, returns are now exceeding sales, a phenomenon we have never seen before," its report said. Detwiler Fenton gave no details on how it had gleaned this information.

While a number of brokerage firms have in recent weeks published reports saying Z10 sales in the U.S. market are slow, none of them have flagged any major concerns about returns.

Since 2007, the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, the industry body that oversees broker-dealers, has fined Detwiler over $250,000 and has cited it for several compliance violations over the past decade.

In December 2011, FINRA sanctioned Detwiler for failing to properly supervise its employees and for allowing its brokers to make more trades than necessary in clients' accounts to boost commissions during a period between 2006 and 2009.

In 2007, the firm, which was then called Detwiler Mitchell Fenton & Graves, settled administrative proceedings that the SEC brought against it for failing to supervise Bradford Bleidt, a former employee who had been simultaneously running a $30 million Ponzi scheme.

TURNAROUND PLAN

BlackBerry is attempting to claw back market share lost to rivals such as Apple Inc's iPhone and Samsung Electronics Co's Galaxy line of smartphones with its new line of devices, powered by the revamped BlackBerry 10 operating system.

The new Z10 touchscreen smartphone, the first of its new devices, hit store shelves earlier this year. And the Q10, with BlackBerry's famed physical keyboard, will go on sale in Canada and the United Kingdom before the end of April.

BlackBerry, which has changed its name from Research In Motion, has yet to prove to the market that its new devices can trigger a turnaround. The company expects to report break-even results in the current quarter, but a true picture will not emerge until later this year.

BlackBerry stock has remained highly volatile as analysts are split on whether the turnaround plan will succeed. Research reports often bring major swings in the company's share price.

Shares of Waterloo, Ontario-based BlackBerry, which fell 7.7 percent on Thursday, closed up less than a percent on Friday at $13.64 on Nasdaq.

how many interviews are too many? ? Ask a Manager

A reader writes:

I applied for a job that I thought I?d be a good fit for. It turned out that I was applying to a recruiter, and he phoned me the next day and wanted to meet. We had a coffee meeting at one of the outlets the company I was applying to is running. I clicked with him immediately, and he said he wanted to introduce me to the client, which would involve a meeting with a recruiter who was working for the company and charged with recruiting for this position.

When I met the second guy, he said he would definitely like to introduce me to the owner/director of the business.

I met with the owner/director, who was really cool. We talked for over an hour, and half an hour after I left, the original recruiter was in touch saying how much she liked me and wanted to meet up again.

An email heads-up from Recruiter 1 said that she would like to hear me explain what I can offer the company and how my skills can help move it forward. I decided to compile notes on all areas? sales, communication, people, costs, then round off with talking through the words people have used to describe me in feedback i?ve had throughout my career. I thought we had covered this already and in detail.

I got to the interview this morning and there was another man there, who the owner had worked with before with huge success. When I sat down, they said, ?So, talk??

This threw me completely and I started talking with a voice I?ve never heard myself using before, just pure nerves. I talked through everything I had prepared and they both said I had covered everything. They did comment on my nerves at the end, and I tried to explain that I am not always like this in business meetings, but this being about all me and at such a late stage? yeah, I was nervous.

The reason my head is on fire just now is that at the end they said, ?We?ll get back to you on Monday, we think? we might need candidates at this stage to complete a personality test. We?ve hired badly in the past and we don?t want to make mistakes again.?

Meanwhile I?m thinking, ?Christ, this is the fourth interview I?ve had regarding this? I?ve been very open and honest and I think I?ve given a full picture of who I am and what I can do.?

They kept talking about avoiding a bad fit, but as far as I was concerned I had decided I really wanted to work for them after interview #3 and told them that. So I guess my quandary is? getting a second interview is a signal that they?re really interested, getting a third one should be even more positive, right? But a fourth or a fifth? I just do not know what to make of this; my head is buzzing.

Getting the right fit is important ? and while you?ve decided that you?d like to work for them, that doesn?t mean that they?re sure that the fit is right on their side.

And sometimes it does take multiple interviews to be sure that the fit is right. And after all, it?s better for both of you to invest time at this stage than for you to end up struggling in the job and quitting or getting fired later.

But when an employer is doing this many interviews and asking for a lot of a candidate?s time, it?s really important for them to ensure that they?re organized and strategic about it ? so that they?re not using someone?s time irresponsibly. And that?s what worries me about this company. They had you do two separate interviews with recruiters before you actually talked with a hiring manager, and when you finally did talk with a hiring manager, they apparently didn?t bother to ask you how your skills could help them (since they needed to ask for a later meeting for that), and then they had you return for a fourth meeting without explaining why that was necessary.

Moreover, in that fourth meeting, it sounds like they weren?t especially warm or collegial (?So, talk??), which is concerning at any stage, but especially in this context.

What we can conclude is that, at a minimum, this is a company that doesn?t quite know how to hire well and isn?t especially concerned about being considerate of you.

So, what can you do? You can certainly say, ?I?m very interested in working with you, but before we go any further, can you tell me what the rest of the process is likely to look like and your timeline for filling the job?? That might get you some useful information, or it might not. It also might nudge them into thinking about how this is all coming across to you, or it might not. But it?s worth asking.

You should also do some serious probing into their culture, and how they make decisions, and how they operate in general ? because those are things that will have a major impact on your quality of life while working there, as well as your ability to succeed in your work for them ? and right now there are some red flags going up around that stuff, so you should really do some due diligence there.

To be clear, it?s not the number of interviews that concerns me on its own ? sometimes that really is warranted, for some jobs (although I don?t know if this is one of them or not). What concerns me is their haphazard approach to it, and you want to see if that approach is typical for them in other areas.

PFT: Te'o says Alabama game doesn't 'define my career'

Dwight FreeneyAP

With almost a month of free agency in the books, here is our rundown on the best players still available at each position ? a list that includes some of PFT?s top 100 free agents as of earlier in the offseason.

Quarterback: Byron Leftwich.

The Seahawks? move for Brady Quinn made a lot of sense ? he was probably the best backup option left. Leftwich has a strong arm and plenty of experience but has struggled to stay healthy.

Down the road, Tim Tebow seems a solid bet?to join the jobless QB ranks, and the moment he does, he becomes the X-factor of the group. Will another team give him a chance?

Running back:?Ahmad Bradshaw.

Durability looms as the major concern with Bradshaw, who has had foot issues.

Fullback: Mike Cox.

Cox started 12 games in the last two seasons for Atlanta.

Wide receiver: Brandon Lloyd, Julian Edelman.

Lloyd would be a fine short-term solution for a team looking for an outside receiver.? Edelman?s youth and versatility give him a slight nod over other candidates for this spot, but can he stay healthy in a regular role?

Tight end: Dallas Clark.

The best receiving option at his position still left on the market. However, he turns 34 in June.

Offensive tackle: Andre Smith, Bryant McKinnie.

Smith has a strong 2012 season but comes with injury and consistency risk. Nevertheless, the young right tackle is the best free agent available. McKinnie gets the nod over Tyson Clabo and Eric Winston on account of his long track record at left tackle.? That said, McKinnie will be 34 in September, and his conditioning can be an issue.

Offensive guard: Brandon Moore, Stephen Peterman.

Moore started 137 connective games for the Jets, while Peterman played every game the last three seasons before being released by the Lions. Both can be serviceable for 2013.

Center: Dan Koppen.

Started 12 games for the AFC West-winning Broncos in 2012. Turns 34 in September.

Defensive end: Dwight Freeney, John Abraham.

They are both pass-rushing aces, but they?re on the wrong side of 30.

Defensive tackle: Sedrick Ellis, Richard Seymour.

Ellis never lived up to his first-round status in New Orleans, but he will only be 28 at the start of the season. Seymour could still help a team, but Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports reported in March that it might take a lucrative deal to get the longtime standout lineman back onto the field in 2013.

Outside linebacker: Shaun Phillips, Daryl Smith.

Phillips will be 32 in May, but he?notched 9.5 sacks in 2012, so it?s not as if he couldn?t be of assistance to a defense that uses 3-4 looks.?Smith was limited to two games a season ago with a groin injury, but he?s the best 4-3 outside linebacker available. Age could also be a concern with Smith, who turned 31 in March. Let?s also mention James Harrison, like Phillips an interesting short-term option for a club employing a ?30? front.

Inside linebacker: Karlos Dansby, Brian Urlacher.

Dansby lost his job when the Dolphins added Dannell Ellerbe, but he comes off a 134-tackle season and has a long track record of success. There?s probably still a place for him in the league, and the Bengals are meeting with him on Wednesday. Urlacher fit best in Chicago, but the door seems to have closed on his return.? Besides, he?ll be 35 in May. Honorable mention goes to Nick Barnett, who has notched more than 100 tackles in every season in which he?s played even close to 16 games.

Cornerback: Antoine Winfield, Quentin Jammer.

Winfield is reportedly getting a good deal of attention in free agency; the ex-Viking is tough and skilled. Reliability and availability are Jammer?s strengths at this stage of the game. He?s made 161 career starts and missed just four games in 11 NFL seasons, all with San Diego.

Safety: Kerry Rhodes, Charles Woodson.

This position was thinned further Tuesday when Dawan Landry agreed with the Jets. Rhodes, who intercepted four passes a season ago, has shown a playmaking flair throughout his career, but he will be 31 this season. Woodson can play multiple secondary spots but has said his phone isn?t exactly ringing off the hook just yet.

Placekicker: Steven Hauschka.

Only 27 years old, Hauschka connected on 24-of-27 field goals in 2012 for Seattle.

Punter: Brian Moorman.

Bounced back in 2012 stint with Cowboys, posting a 38.9-yard net average in 12 games.

Return specialist: ?Josh Cribbs.

(AP) ? Years before Impressionism ? the influential Paris-based art movement ? began, a similar style of painting capturing colorful impressions of light may have existed in Italy, according to a new exhibit.

The show at Paris' Orangery museum displays works from 1860s Florence with vivid, dappled light ? in a strikingly similar way to famed painters like Claude Monet from the 1870s.

The movement was called "Macchiaioli," after the Italian for "stain," to evoke splashes of light in the painting.

"It's practically unknown around the world, but like the Impressionists they used the bright light of open air, contrasting shadows, and they wished to rebel against academic painting by going out and in the open air," said curator Beatrice Avanzi.

"The Macchiaioli: the Italian Impressionists?" show runs Wednesday through July 22.

Primitive Fish With Butt Fins Reveals Quirks of Evolution

A 370-milion-year-old, primitive fish sported a weird pair of fins just below its anus, new research shows.

The strange appendages, detailed today (April 9) in the journal Biology Letters, were found on an ancient jawless fish called Euphanerops longaevus that lived around the time that jawless fishes like lampreys split off from jawed vertebrates, which include everything from sharks to humans.

"What's weird about this organism is that it had a paired anal fin. It's unique ? no other known fossil or modern fish is known to have that disposition," said study co-author Robert Sansom, a paleontologist at the University of Manchester in the U.K.

The findings suggest that early in primitive vertebrates' history, evolution experimented with a number of wacky body plans, only some of which survived, Sansom told LiveScience. [Image Gallery: The Freakiest Looking Fish]

Early fish

The Euphanerops fish were 3.9 inches (10 centimeters) long and looked somewhat like modern-day eels. The specimens were unearthed in a fossil bed in Miguasha, Quebec, decades ago, and were stored in collections in the National History Museum in London and the Museum d'Histoire Naturelle, Miguasha, in Quebec.

Previously, researchers weren't sure exactly what to make of the creatures' weird fins. Some thought the anal appendages might actually have been displaced from another part of the animal's body in the fossilization process.

Early body plan

The researchers weren't convinced of the displacement explanation. By comparing the 3D surfaces of the fossil under a microscope, the team concluded that the fin pair was actually located below the anus on the living creature. Though it's not clear exactly how the fins were used, the fins most likely helped the fish get around, Sansom said.

The fossil dates to a critical period of vertebrate evolution: Jawed and jawless vertebrates diverged roughly around this time. Eventually jawed fish developed paired fins (but not anal fins) that evolved to become arms and legs. In fact, the same genes code for shark fins and human limbs.

The discovery changes the view of how fishes were evolving at this time, Sansom said.

"Rather than gradual acquisition of complex characteristics, maybe there was a bit more experimentation and odd acquisitions," he said.

Specialized trait?

The finding of paired anal fins is "beautifully illustrated," said Michael Coates, a vertebrate paleontologist at the University of Chicago, who was not involved in the study.

"It might just be the first vestige, it might be some kind of precursor to generating paired fins" that are commonly seen throughout jawed vertebrates, Coates told LiveScience.

But it's also possible they were a specialized trait that only Euphanerops possessed, not reflective of the evolutionary history of jawed vertebrates as a whole, Coates said.
