We have the entire lineup for the 2013 Fantasia International Film Festival that runs in Montreal, from July 18th, 2013 to August 7th, 2013. A lot of interesting films here and those of you lucky enough to attend, are going to have a lot to watch over three weeks.

The Fantasia International Film Festival is proud to announce the rest of
our 120-feature lineup that comprises our 2013 event, along with a string
of additional details that mark our 17th edition as a standout. Be sure to

*HORROR IS CHILD?S PLAY ? DON MANCINI?S CURSE OF CHUCKY (WORLD PREMIERE)*
A rarity among genre franchises, the *CHILD?S PLAY* series (begun in 1988)
has retained the sure-handed guidance of original screenwriter/creator *Don
Mancini *throughout killer doll Chucky?s decades?-long reign of horror.
Mancini, who will be hosting our ?scar-studded? world premiere, graduated
to the director?s chair with 2004?s SEED OF CHUCKY, after having co-written
or written every entry in the series. His longevity with the project is, of
course, matched by the fiendish voiceover work by the incomparable Brad
Dourif as Chucky, as well as the enduring input of producer David Kirschner
(FRAILTY). For the new CURSE, SEED OF CHUCKY FX master Tony Gardner (ARMY
OF DARKNESS, DARKMAN) brings the deadly doll back to life once more through
ingenious puppeteering work. CURSE OF CHUCKY returns Chucky to the scarier
roots of the series? initial entries, going more for the jugular than the

*! The brand new, big-screen GATCHAMAN is directed by *Toya Sato* (the
GAMBLING APOCALYPSE KAIJI films) Written by Yusuke Watanabe (20TH CENTURY
BOYS, GANTZ), boasts visual effects by Takashi Yamazaki (SPACE BATTLESHIP
YAMATO) and features a cast that includes Tori Matsuzaka (a Super Sentai

SILENT COMEDY CLASSICS WITH LIVE MUSICAL ACCOMPANIMENT*
For one night only, on the evening of?July 22, Montreal cinephiles will
have a rare chance to experience a trio of silent-era comedy masterpieces
starring *Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton *and *Laurel & Hardy*, projected
under the stars on a giant outdoor screen, with live piano accompaniment by
the renowned composer *Gabriel Thibaudeau*. ?Among his many
accomplishments, Thibaudeau has written, conducted and performed silent
film score accompaniment at the Cannes Film Festival (in 1998, for Paul
Leni?s THE MAN WHO LAUGHS) and the Toronto International Film Festival (in
2005, for Robert Flaherty?s NANOOK OF THE NORTH) and his work appears on
numerous DVD and Blu-Ray releases of silent cinema classics. No stranger to
the Fantasia universe, Thibaudeau wrote and conducted the orchestral
accompaniment for our gala METROPOLIS and PHANTOM OF THE OPERA events. For
this new event, which we?re calling LES ROIS DU RIRE (the Kings of Comedy),
Thibaudeau will be live-scoring Charlie Chaplin?s THE IMMIGRANT (1919),
Buster Keaton?s ONE WEEK (1920) and Leo McCarey?s LIBERTY (1929). This
special event is a co-presentation between Fantasia and the Just For Laughs
comedy festival, in collaboration with Archambault and the Cin?math?que
qu?b?coise. Screenings will take place on JFL?s Videotron Stage in the Quartier
de Spectacles in downtown Montreal.

A special retro screening of Sheldon Renan and Leonard Schrader?s

event for *Snuff movies : Naissance d?une l?gende urbaine*, written by
Antonio Dominguez Leiva and Fantasia?s own Simon Laperri?re.

What happens when a rock star invites his brother to accompany him on tour?
Chaos, simply! ?Opening Film of the Tribeca Film Festival, the hilarious
MISTAKEN FOR STRANGERS is a triumph of cinema v?rit? that captures like no

*AFTER SCHOOL MIDNIGHTERS (Japan) Dir: **Hitoshi Takekiyo***

*THE APOLOGY KING (Japan) Dir: N**obuo Mizuta***
In this vibrant comedy of manners from director Nobuo Mizuta, Sadao Abe
(THE GREAT YOKAI WAR) stars as an eccentric motivational speaker running
the Tokyo Apology Centre, which advise in the age-old Japanese practice of
apologizing known as ?dogeza?. Screenwriter Kankuro Kudo (ZEBRAMAN, PING
PONG) builds his story as a relentless escalation of cases to be tackled,
and it is in their cumulative effect that THE APOLOGY KING succeeds,
defying expectations of scale and thrusting the viewer into a complex,
absurd and hilarious supra-case in need of more fixing than a simple

*BAD FILM (Japan) Dir: Sion Sono*
A recently unearthed and completed early Sion Sono (*LOVE EXPOSURE, SUICIDE
CLUB*) work and pieced together from more than 150 hours of footage shot on
Hi-8 video in 1995, starring the young director in a lead role, and
hundreds of members of Tokyo GAGAGA, the performance art collective he
founded in 1993. BAD FILM is not only entirely inaccurate in its title but
a shockingly assured early film. This is simply a must for any
self-respecting Sonophile, as well as one of this year?s most exciting
retro discoveries, for any fan of loud, abrasive and subversive Japanese

French judges seize Tapie assets in arbitration case
PARIS (Reuters) - Judges have ordered a Mediterranean villa and other assets to be seized from a French businessman at the center of a fraud investigation that could weigh on ex-president Nicolas Sarkozy's hopes of a comeback, legal sources said.
Bailiffs will confiscate assets worth tens of millions of euros belonging to tycoon Bernard Tapie, in a move that suggests investigating judges believe they have evidence of fraud in a 403 million euro ($515.27 million) arbitration payment he received in 2008 under Sarkozy's presidency.
Finance Minister Pierre Moscovici said the Socialist government, which took power after Sarkozy's May 2012 election defeat, had asked for "protective measures" to be taken in case reparations needed to be made to the state.
Under formal investigation since June 28 on suspicion that the arbitration payment may have been rigged, Tapie has denied any wrongdoing. His lawyer could not be reached on Wednesday.
The center-right Sarkozy has immunity for life for any acts carried out while he was president. However he could come under scrutiny if it emerged that the arbitration settlement was being planned earlier on, when he was finance minister.
The Tapie affair is one of a string of legal headaches pressing on Sarkozy as he mulls a possible political comeback to reunite his fractured UMP conservative party ahead of the 2017 presidential election.
It has embroiled several of his former cabinet members including International Monetary Fund head Christine Lagarde, his finance minister in 2008.
Tapie - who supported Sarkozy in the last two elections - was awarded the money to settle a dispute with now defunct state-owned bank Credit Lyonnais over a 1993 share sale.
The 70-year-old was awarded 285 million euros, rising to 403 million with interest and before taxes, to settle his claim that the bank defrauded him by buying his stake in sports firm Adidas for 315.5 million euros only to sell it a year on for 701 million.

Microsoft says Windows 8.1 RTM will be available in late August
SOFTWARE DEVELOPER Microsoft has said OEMs and system builders will have access to the final version of Windows 8.1 in late August.
Microsoft's Windows 8 operating system has met with frosty reception from users, with its tiled user interface being something of a Marmite feature, while the lack of Start button has further alienated users. The firm's answer is Windows 8.1 and at Microsoft's Worldwide Partner Conference Windows CMO and CFO Tami Reller said system builders and OEMs will get the release to manufacturing (RTM) version at the end of August.
However Microsoft poured cold water on thoughts of a speedy release, saying that a late August launch will allow firms to get new systems ready in time for the holiday season, which typically starts in early November. Given that Microsoft is unlikely to anger system builders and OEMs by releasing retail copies of Windows 8.1 months before "new" systems are on the shelves, it is a fair bet that Windows 8.1 won't be available until sometime in November.
Microsoft also tried to dispel the notion that Windows 8 simply wasn't selling, with Reller announcing that the firm had sold 100 million licenses. Of course what Microsoft didn't say is how many of those 100 million were sold to OEMs that simply preload it onto machines that will then be reloaded with Windows 7. Instead Reller said that "new customer activation continues at a consistent pace", but what that pace is, is anyone's guess.
Microsoft has said that Windows 8.1 is a refinement to Windows 8, but perhaps the most important announcement the firm made was that it will include a Start button, albeit one that brings up the Windows 8 tiled interface. The firm has also released a Windows 8.1 Preview for those aching to get a Start button and boot directly into desktop mode. ?

On July 3, the Mongolian parliament endorsed Tsakhiagiin Elbegdorj's second term as the country's president based on a report by the General Election Commission. The swearing-in ceremony will be organized on July 10, on the eve of the three-day national holiday, Naadam.
According to the General Election Commission, the incumbent President Elbegdorj, nominated by the Democratic Party (DP), was re-elected by a narrow majority of 50.23% in the first round. The opposition Mongolian People's Party (MPP) nominee Member of Parliament (MP) Badnaanyambuugyn Bat-Erdene received 41.97%; and the third candidate, Mongolian People's Revolutionary Party (MPRP) nominee Natsagyn Udval, collected 6.5% of votes. Turnout was 66.5%. The opposition parties have acknowledged the DP victory, thus creating a stable political
atmosphere and ruling out any claims for a run-off election.
This was the first Mongolian election monitored by the Election Observation Mission of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) since Mongolia became an OSCE member on November 21, 2012. Despite some areas needing improvement, the OSCE observers concluded the election was competitive and free in their interim report. By highlighting the areas still in need of improvement, the OSCE election monitoring mission's report will provide extra leverage to Mongolian political leaders who are working to improve the country's democratic political institutions. Moreover, the OSCE's involvement will almost certainly help to enhance mutual understanding between Mongolia and its European partners.
As a result of the presidential election, the DP will dominate Mongolian politics until 2016 and continue to play a determinative role in directing major political and socio-economic policies. In addition to a majority in the parliament, DP currently holds the posts of parliamentary chairman, prime minister, as well as president. Moreover, the DP controls the governorships and boards of citizens' representatives of most provinces as well as the capital city, Ulaanbaatar.
Nevertheless, Elbegdorj's pre-campaign strategy and actions actually highlighted his party's internal challenges to present the DP as a transparent, responsible, and democratic political force. These challenges include a separation of legislative and executive bodies, upholding the rule of law, and overhauling the country's mining policies.
The separation of Mongolia's legislative and executive branches has become blurred since the end of the 1990s, as successive majority and coalition parties have had to defend their fragile cabinets. Although Elbegdorj criticized and rejected endorsing a number of cabinet members of the MPP-led governments, he has remained silent when his own party filled 17 out of 19 cabinet posts with serving parliamentarians.
The opposition and the public have called on a clearer separation between the legislative and executive branches in order to improve government accountability and transparency. To satisfy their demands, just before the presidential election, Elbegdorj submitted a draft bill that would only allow the prime minister to simultaneously serve in the cabinet and as an active member of parliament. The chairman of the parliament agreed to discuss the bill, but even if passed and signed into law, the actual separation would not apply until the cabinet following the 2016 parliamentary elections. In order to hold the fragile coalition government together, the DP is unlikely to separate the legislative and executive authorities.
Another major reform initiated and strongly advocated by Elbegdorj has been judicial reform and countering corruption. Because of its politicization by the political parties, the influence of various business factions, and a lack of long-term vision since the beginning of the 1990s, the judiciary has become one of the main obstacles for the consolidation of new political institutions.
Meanwhile, corruption has become a widespread social phenomenon. Under Elbegdorj's presidency, comprehensive judicial reform has begun and the Independent Authority against Corruption began investigating high-ranking government officials, including former president Nambaryn Enkhbayar, parliamentarians, governors and officials of state-owned enterprises (eg, Mongolian Airlines and the Erdenet copper mine). However, both the politicization of the judiciary and the targeting of opposition party-affiliated members in corruption cases have come under criticism from the opposition parties and the public.
In a long overdue response, the DP took some measures to answer this criticism just before the presidential election. Prime Minister Norovyn Altankhuyag sacked one of his deputies in the Government Secretariat in light of a corruption investigation, and the General Prosecutor's Office permitted the anti-corruption agency to investigate incumbent MP Sangajav Bayartsogt's offshore income case. The latter's offshore account was disclosed earlier this year by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists.
The unfinished business of Elbegdorj's first term is the reform of mining regulations. Using his authority as the head of the National Security Council, the president suspended the issuance and processing of both mining and exploration licenses in 2010 until comprehensive revisions were made to the existing regulations. Although the presidential administration has taken the lead in revising Mongolia's mining regulations, its first draft encountered criticism from miners and investors for increasing the state's involvement as well as creating unclear procedures for redistributing mining licenses.
Because of the growing influence of entrepreneurs and pro-business factions in the political parties-especially of the DP and MPP - and parliament (the 2012-2016 parliament has the largest, visible representation of business leaders), the presidential office seems to be caught between business interests and public pressure for "responsible mining". Since 2010, several officials of the Mineral Resources Authority of Mongolia have been prosecuted for corruption charges; but, notably, these measures were only applied to activities in the last two years and against officials affiliated with the MPP.
These challenges will continue to test Elbegdorj during his "lame duck" term. However, with the growing importance of Mongolia's natural resources and commitment to democracy, he will continue to play an important role in the foreign policy realm. And, thanks to the increase in state funds (particularly from the operation of major mines like Oyu Tolgoi and Tavan Tolgoi), Elbegdorj will not face major obstacles to fulfilling his pledges to provide financial assistance to students, mothers, the elderly and public servants.
His fights against alcoholism, protection of the environment, and for direct democracy will earn him extra points. But the public will judge most closely how he deals with factional interests both within and outside his own party: separating legislative and executive authority, reforming the judiciary and eradicating corruption, as well as establishing a comprehensive legal regime for responsible mining.

When in his State of the Union address, President Obama called to make ?high-quality preschool available to every child in America,? he echoed the opinions of many child-development experts. The world is finally recognizing the value of a developmentally appropriate early childhood education. More state and local governments are offering free half and full-day pre-K for four year olds to ensure they are ready to learn when they enroll in school (28 percent of all four year olds attend state-financed ECE programs). Synagogues and day schools are expanding their preschool programs, adding hours and accepting younger children. Chabad has an extensive system of lowcost preschools that are easy to access. And then there is the world of for-profit preschool and daycare centers, which benefit from economies of scale and large advertising budgets.

While JCC early childhood programs have long enjoyed a reputation for excellence in their communities, with some running wait lists, how are they reacting to these challenges? ?It?s impossible to compete with free,? says Mark Horowitz, JCC Association?s director of early childhood education and family engagement, but JCC early childhood centers are positioning themselves to remain the providers of choice of the best early childhood education. JCCs have the facilities?pool, gym, playground, classes?to create a community hub and build lasting relationships. ?It?s an opportunity for families to play together,? Horowitz says. ?People who make friends in pre-K stay friends.?
Preparing for Public Pre-K
Ora Cohen Rosenfeld, early childhood director at the JCC of Greater Washington in Rockville, Maryland, was nervous about the prospect of government-funded ECE, but her anxiety lessened as she realized that the JCC could be part of whatever happened in the field. She is making sure that their licensing is in line, Cohen Rosenfeld says, so the JCCGW school will be able to provide universal pre-K, when and if that day comes.
They don?t take advantage of a religious exemption, for instance, so they will be in a better position to accept government funding. ?We are living in a more affluent area,? Cohen Rosenfeld notes, and she believes that public pre-K will be means-tested. ?If it does happen,? she acknowledges, ?it will have a tremendous impact on our program? but the JCC could expand its infant-care offerings, which are in high demand at many JCCs.
Offering an Extended Day
Although many states offer free pre-K, Florida is the one state without religious restrictions on providers, so it acts as a test case in some respects. In Florida, all JCCs get government funding for voluntary two and a half hour pre-K. Since almost no one comes for only two and a half hours anymore, the JCCs offer wrap-around programs to make up an extended day.
In Akron, Ohio, the Shaw JCC does much the same, according to Lori Bernstein, director of early childhood and school age services. They serve all the school districts in the area and coordinate with the state developmental disabilities program. ?We offer services prior or afterwards,? Bernstein says, including a before and after-school program for children from pre-K through ninth grade. Seventy-five percent of her 181 students are at the JCC more than five hours per day.

The Appeal of Jewish Values? and Quality
Many of the families at the Akron JCC preschool are not Jewish, but ?we have a very Jewish-values mission,? Bernstein says. ?We want children and families to grow up in the JCC.? To accomplish that, she schedules lots of family programming when parents are available?Sundays and evenings?and ties food into everything.
The JCC and the school celebrate the Jewish holidays, and while the early learning center acknowledges what is going on in the lives of the children at Christmas or Halloween, Bernstein grounds these events in universal values. ?We are very fortunate in our community positioning and our member support,? Bernstein says.
The ECE center at the Aaron Family JCC of Dallas is welcoming more non-Jewish families as well. ?Non-Jewish families are choosing us because of our quality and hours,? says director Tara Ohayon, and she finds that they are enthusiastic about participating in Shabbat and holiday celebrations. Unlike most JCC schools, Dallas is seeing demand for three and even two-day offerings. Ohayon finds that the number of stay-at-home parents is increasing in her area, but she doesn?t see any relation to unemployment.
The major competitive pressure Ohayon is feeling is from prep-style preschools, which appeal to parents trying to get their children into elite private schools. Such preparatory ECE centers focus on rote skills and memorization. Ohayon believes that urging three and four year olds to memorize letters and sums is developmentally inappropriate. When parents come to tour the JCC school, she does a lot of educating, citing the latest research about child development.

An Early Learning Framework Exclusive to JCCs
Ohayon was introduced to Sheva?JCC Association?s new paradigm for early childhood education?at the Professional Conference. Eighty-four ECE professionals, representing half the JCCs with early childhood programs, attended the Conference and focused on Sheva. Almost all of them are participating in the ongoing learning groups that are at the heart of the new approach.
According to Horowitz, just as An Ethical Start? did, Sheva integrates Jewish ethics and values into early childhood education. Sheva enables teachers to communicate the latest research on child development to families, as well as incorporating a real connection to Israel.
Other Jewish schools don?t have as rich a network, says Horowtiz, citing the professional development at the program?s core. ?We have ongoing study and learning groups that will have an impact down the road.?
Rosenfeld agrees. ?We?re exploring how to use Sheva to get out to the community what our core values are and how our program supports them.? Lori Bernstein feels that Sheva is a natural part of their philosophy at the Shaw JCC. ?We?re unfolding Sheva for the staff and working to pull pieces apart,? she says. They will take next year to look at individual elements ?and we?ll personalize it for our JCC in Akron.?
According to Horowitz, the best early childhood education appreciates the child?s natural development and creates learning programs that respect those developmental stages. Sheva is ?a comprehensive, holistic way of looking at children and their families,? he says.
It?s also a powerful way for JCCs to distinguish their ECE centers in an increasingly competitive environment.

There are always a wide variety of reactions when the MLB All-Star lineups are announced, and this year was no exception.
Fans often cry out when their favorite players are left off the squad, but that is bound to happen when you have to select the top players at each position. If the cutoff point were higher, fans would still complain about the new borderline players who were left off the expanded roster.
Twitter gives fans the ability to connect more directly with their favorite athletes and sports personalities. Many managers wish this connection didn?t exist because it gives the players a direct line of communication to the world without the guidance of a public relations manager. Fortunately for fans, managers can?t completely restrict their access.
"Snubbed" is a term that always surfaces when the All-Star Game rolls around. People are quick to compare stats of players who made the roster and ones who didn?t to prove they deserved a spot on the team. It?s easy to pull out rogue stats to prove that a player was snubbed and they belong in a spot over someone else. You simply have to dig to find the right ones and a case can be made for almost anyone to get a spot on the roster for the Midsummer Classic.
Whether a player was surprised to make the team in the first place or surprised to be left off, there were plenty of reactions when the 2013 MLB All-Star Game rosters was released. Here are some of the top reactions for this season's selections.

Two championship records while China's hurdles legacy continues at the Asian Championships
The 110 hurdles is almost synonymous in Asia with Liu Xiang and on the third day of the 20th Asian Athletics Championships in Pune, India, it was the turn of Jiang Fan to take China?s legacy forward in the event on Friday (6).
Fan, 23, a silver medallist at the 2011 World University Games kept his cool despite two false starts to romp home in the final in 13.61 (+0.1) for his maiden continental title.
After the false starts accounted for Iraq?s Rami Ibrahim and South Korea?s Park Tae-Kyong, Fan bolted off the blocks quickly and faced very little challenge with Kuwait?s Abdulaziz Almandeel finishing second in 13.78.
It was China?s 12th gold medal in this event in Asian Championships history, underlining their strength and depth over the barriers.
On a cool evening which also saw a brief but spell of rain midway through the programme, two championship records were created.
China?s Wang Zheng won the women?s Hammer with 72.78m, improving upon the mark of 72.07m set by compatriot Zhang Wenxiu in 2009. The second record emerged after an amazing display of front-running by Bahrain teenager Ruth Chebet in the women?s 3000 Steeplechase.
Chebet, hit the front early and built up a big lead, catching India?s Asian Games champion Sudha Singh off-guard.
Sudha, the Asian leader this season at 9:45.60, couldn?t counter the Bahrain girl?s audacious tactics leaving Chebet to cross the line in 9:40.84, beating her own national record by nearly 12 seconds and an improvement by a similar amount upon Minori Hayakari?s championship record of 9:52.42 set in 2011.
Another precocious teenager held sway in the men?s Long Jump pit. China?s 16-year-old Wang Jianan showed plenty of composure in wet and windy conditions to take the gold medal in 7.95m, just three centimetres ahead of India?s Kumarvel Prem Kumar.
Bahrain?s Tareq Mubarek Taher returned to the top of the podium after a four-year gap in the men?s 3000 Steeplechase. The two-time Asian Games champion was challenged closely by compatriot Dejene Regassa Mootuma until Taher pulled away decisively in the final lap for a convincing win in 8:34.77, with Regassa second in 8:37.40.
?I had an ankle injury and this is only my second competition on return,? said Taher. ?I am really pleased with the win. The conditions were ideal and I enjoyed it a lot,? added the 29-year-old.
Saudi Arabia unleashed a surprise winner in the men?s 1500 with Imed Hamed Noor who timed his charge to perfection. Two Qataris ? Mohamad Al-Garni and Hamza Driouch ? set the pace in the entertaining race with Iran?s Sajad Moradi and Bahrain?s Bilal Mansour Ali staying in the mix.
The Qataris led at the bell but Noor hit the front with 300 metres left.
Just as a sharp spell of rain drenched the venue, the tall Saudi moved to the front coming into the back straight and had a commanding lead in the home stretch.
Spreading his arms wide and having the luxury of being able to relax 20 metres from the finish, despite the downpour, Noor was a picture of delight as he crossed the line in 3:39.51.
Al-Garni warded off a fast-finishing Ali for the silver medal in 3:40.75 to the Bahrain runner?s 3:40.96.
Betlhem Belayneh Desalegn won United Arab Emirates? first gold of the championship in the women?s 1500, outwitting Bahrain?s Mimi Belete. Desalegn timed 4:13.67 to Belete?s 4:14.04.
False starts had a say in the way the medals were decided in the 100 hurdles as Japan?s Hitomi Shimura and Kazakhstan?s Anastassiya Pilipenk were pulled up for false starts but ran the race under protest, finishing third and fourth, only to be disqualified later. on.
In the end, Japan?s Ayako Kimura was a comfortable winner in 13.25 seconds, finishing ahead of Kazakhstan?s Anastassiya Soprunov, in 13.44, after China?s Wang Dou, another strong medal contender, crashed into the second hurdle to bow out.
Uzbekistan?s Ivan Zaytsev, second on the Asian list in Javelin this season behind Japan?s 2009 World bronze medallist Yukifumi Murakami, claimed the gold medal in his specialist event with his first-round throw of 79.76m. Sachith Madhuranga won Sri Lanka?s first medal here, taking the silver in 79.62.
In the absence of Kazakh London 2012 Olympic Games champion Olga Rypakova, Uzbekistan?s Anastasiya Juravlyeva pocketed the women?s Triple Jump gold with an effort of 14.18m with her compatriot Aleksandra Kotlyarova taking the silver at 13.89m.
China remains in top spot on the medals table with eight gold medals after three days of competition. Bahrain are in second place with four gold medals.

New leader starts work as Egypt counts dead

CAIRO (Reuters) - Egypt's new interim leader held talks on Saturday with the army chief and political leaders on how to pull the country out of crisis as the death toll from Islamist protests over the army's overthrow of President Mohamed Mursi rose to at least 35.
The most populous Arab nation of 84 million people was thrown into more turmoil on Friday when tens of thousands of demonstrators across the country answered a call by Mursi's Muslim Brotherhood movement to stage a "Friday of Rejection".
At least 35 people died and more than 1,000 were wounded in violence on Friday and Saturday, with the army struggling to maintain order in Cairo, Alexandria and other cities and towns, where pro- and anti-Mursi demonstrators fought street battles.
The most deadly clashes were in the Mediterranean city of Alexandria, where 14 people died and 200 were wounded.
In central Cairo, rival protesters clashed late into the night with stones, knives, petrol bombs and clubs as armored personnel carriers rumbled among them.
It took hours to restore calm on the Nile River bridges around the landmark Egyptian Museum. Anti-Mursi activists remained encamped in a suburb of the capital.
Interim head of state Adli Mansour, installed to oversee a military roadmap to elections, spent his first day at the office at Itihadiya Palace, where until a week ago Mursi ran Egypt.
He met armed forces chief General Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, who announced Mursi's ouster on Wednesday, and also held talks with former U.N. nuclear agency chief Mohamed ElBaradei, a leading liberal, and other politicians who had opposed Mursi.
ElBaradei, 71, is seen as the favorite to lead a new administration focused on reviving a shattered economy and restoring civil peace and security. An aide to ElBaradei said the prime minister was expected to be appointed on Saturday.
At the same meeting was Abdel Moneim Abol Fotouh, a former Brotherhood member who split from the movement in 2011 to mount his own presidential bid, an official in his party said.
In defiant speeches, Brotherhood leaders continued to denounce Mursi's overthrow and demand his reinstatement. Their stand may complicate the military-led political transition.
The army has given few details and no timeframe for elections, adding to political uncertainty at a time when many Egyptians fear violence could polarize society still further.
Egypt's first freely elected president was toppled after mass demonstrations against Muslim Brotherhood rule, the latest twist in a tumultuous two years since the fall of Hosni Mubarak in the Arab uprisings that swept the region in 2011.
SINAI VIOLENCE
While the Brotherhood has insisted it will not resort to violence, some radical Islamists have no such inhibitions.
On Saturday, a Coptic Christian priest was shot dead in Egypt's lawless North Sinai province in what could be the first sectarian attack since Mursi's overthrow, raising concerns about the potential for further religious violence.
On Friday, five police officers were shot dead in separate incidents in the North Sinai town of El Arish, and while it was not clear whether the attacks were linked to Mursi's ouster, hardline Islamists there have warned they will fight back.
There were more attacks on army checkpoints in Sinai overnight and gunmen fired on a central security building in El Arish, security sources said.
A new Islamist group announced its formation in the Sinai peninsula adjoining Israel and the Gaza Strip, calling the army's removal of Mursi a declaration of war on their faith and threatening violence to impose Islamic law.
Ansar al-Shariah (Supporters of Islamic Law) in Egypt said it would gather arms and start training members, in a statement on an online forum for Sinai militants recorded by SITE Monitoring.
The events of the last week have raised alarm among Egypt's allies in the West, including main aid donors the United States and the European Union, and in Israel, with which Egypt has had a U.S.-backed peace treaty since 1979.
Newspapers quoted ElBaradei as saying he expected Gulf Arab monarchies that were hostile to the Brotherhood's rule to pile in with financial support for the new authorities.
Only gas-rich Qatar provided substantial funds to Mursi's government with a total of $7 billion in loans and grants. Turkey and Libya also provided smaller loans and deposits.
Mursi's overthrow was greeted with wild scenes of celebration but infuriated supporters who fear a return to the suppression of Islamists they endured under military rule.
RISING TENSIONS
In one of the first outbreaks of violence on Friday, three protesters were shot dead outside the Republican Guard compound where Mursi is being held, security sources said. The army denied responsibility for the shootings. It was not clear whether other security forces were involved.
On Saturday, some 2,000 people gathered outside the barracks. A man with a loudspeaker told soldiers separated from protesters by razor wire not to open fire.
Thousands more Islamists braved the fierce midday sun at a sit-in outside a nearby mosque. Shawled women shook their heads and wept as an imam led prayers for "martyrs" of the violence.
At least 15 tanks were positioned on streets leading to the square outside the mosque, but they were further away than on Friday in a sign the military was keen to ease tensions.
Elsewhere in Cairo, the retrial of former autocrat Mubarak resumed at a snail's pace, in a bizarre coda to the past week's drama. The 85-year-old, who ruled Egypt for 30 years, is charged with conspiracy to murder hundreds of demonstrators in 2011.
The judge adjourned the case until August 17. He said he would continue to show proceedings live on state television, despite unhappiness among army commanders at seeing their former head of state and air force chief paraded in a courtroom cage.

Japan PM Abe set to win upper house majority
Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's (pic) ruling bloc is set to secure a majority in the upper house in this month's election, newspaper polls said today. Victory would give Abe control of both chambers of the legislature and he would not have to face a public vote for three years.
The Liberal Democratic Party and its coalition ally should comfortably win more than half of the 121 seats up for grabs in the 242-seat upper house election on July 21, according to separate polls in the Nikkei newspaper, Kyodo News and the Asahi Shimbun.
The ruling bloc needs to win 63 seats to secure a majority in the chamber. In the last session the opposition Democratic Party of Japan was the biggest single grouping.
A poll by the liberal-leaning Asahi Shimbun estimated that the conservative LDP was likely to win 63-73 seats.
Supporters say Abe will use his renewed political clout to force changes on cosseted and inefficient industries such as agriculture, and to cut a swathe through labour laws that businesses say make it too difficult to hire and fire workers.
Detractors say he will abandon the economic project of his first six months and get back on his hobby horse - revising the constitution, boosting the military and re-assessing Japan's wartime history.

Google Supposedly Paid Off AdBlock Plus to Not Block Google Ads
Any advanced Internetter knows that the best way to enjoy the pure Internet is to get an ad blocker. It zaps away all the excess and gives you the meaty good stuff. However, it looks like companies are figuring ways to circumvent ad blockers... by paying them off. Google is reportedly paying one of the most popular ad blockers, AdBlock Plus, to not block Google's ads.
Basically, Google is getting Google ads whitelisted from the ad blocking service. It's unclear how much Google is paying AdBlock Plus and what other companies are doing the same but AdBlock Plus has always (since 2011, at least) maintained a whitelist to allow ads that are nonintrusive to exist on the Internet. AdBlock Plus describes the whitelist specifics:
Whitelisting is free for all small websites and blogs. However, managing this list requires significant effort on our side and this task cannot be completely taken over by volunteers as it happens with common filter lists. That?s why we are being paid by some larger properties that serve nonintrusive advertisements that want to participate in the Acceptable Ads initiative.

Indian PC gamers take to Twitter to protest EA price rises
Gamers in India have taken to Twitter to protest Electronic Arts' plans for gaming price rises in that country.
Under the hashtag #EAPCIndia, dozens of gamers have turned up to complain about EA's decision to price PC games at significantly higher levels than the traditional 999 to 1499 Indian Rupees, which is equivalent to between $17 and $25. According to MCV India, forthcoming games like Battlefield 4, Need For Speed: Rivals and FIFA 14 are priced at between Rs 2499 and Rs 3499 ($59) bringing them into line with Western prices.
MCV India speculates that the move has been prompted by a desire to stop non-Indian gamers using VPN services to buy games cheaply via EA's online retail site Origin. EA isn't the only company raising prices, although reports suggest that other publishers have raised prices less sharply.
On Twitter, gamers are unimpressed. One wrote that it is "a dumb business move, pushing people to piracy". Another stated, "It's just hilarious that they expect people to pay over 3k for FIFA 14 or a Need For Speed title."
